We recognise that each child, parent, and nursery relationship is unique, and we use our experience to support everyone in making that transition into nursery life as smooth as possible.

Before you start your full sessions your child will be invited in for a minimum of 3 FREE setting in sessions within the nursery

Settling in sessions

Session 1

During the first session you will be invited in to sit with your child in their new teaching room. During this time, you will be introduced to the team and in particular your new key worker. We will also go through some paperwork to discuss any allergies, interests and routines which you child may have. The team will engage with your child to create a warm and welcoming environment whilst they are also safe in their knowledge that you are just a few metres away.

Session 2

Session 2 and all subsequent sessions; these will last for between 1 to 2 hours each. Upon your arrival you will be greeted by a member of the team and we will encourage your child to stay with the team in their room without you for the duration of the settle session. Whilst your child is with us, they can experience activities taking place and meet their peers.

The sessions are short tasters and will help your child to understand that although you are dropping them off to nursery you will of course be coming back to get them. Every child is different but we hope during this time your child will get an initial feel of the nursery and their carers. If we feel necessary, we may ask to have extended sessions or extra settle sessions, though this is rarely needed.

These sessions are free and flexible to suit as best we can. We usually book them in for a one-to-two-week period in the lead up to your official start date with us so to keep the experience fresh in your child’s mind. The team will of course give you feedback at every step of the way.

Strong relationships – Your Key Person

Our experience has shown that having a Key Person for your child is the most effective way of ensuring that children develop a strong relationship with a significant adult in the nursery, giving every child the reassurance to feel secure, familiar, and confident in the nursery environment.

At Southgate your child’s Key person will:

  • Be assigned to your child on their first settling-in session, getting to know the child and family well in order to form strong relationships to support emotional needs.
  • Ensure they have all of the information about your child and share this with other staff so that your child’s individual needs are cared for throughout each and every day.
  • Carry out assessments and plan for your child’s development, ensuring they are always challenged and supported to reach their full potential.
  • Although you will be allocated a key person please rest assured that every team member in the room will know your child well and be on hand to meet their needs at all times.
