We are celebrating Black History Month, which is celebrated throughout October, gives everyone the opportunity to share, celebrate and understand the impact of black heritage and culture. This month; the children have been taking part in various activities which involve getting to know key historical figures, it has been amazing discussing the importance of equality, whilst learning about some truly inspirational people and getting to know more about different cultures.

This month, as part of our learning and celebration for Black History Month, we learned about Garrett Morgan. He began his career as a sewing machine mechanic. In 1923, he created a new traffic signal with a warning light to tell other drivers to stop. He began developing it after many accidents were occurring at a junction. He invented the first traffic light with a caution signal which we now know as the yellow light. By having this in place, it regulated crossing vehicles more safely.

We spent some time talking about Garrett Morgan and discussed the importance of using traffic light systems and how it promotes safety when driving and crossing roads. Our children used different materials and paint to create their own traffic lights. Fantastic work!
