Throughout the month of October, we have been celebrating Black History Month. Our children have been involved in many activities to learn more including learning about the Maasai Warriors who can trace their ancestry back to the northern rift valley in Sudan. As an activity we asked the children to make necklaces with different craft materials. The younger children were given different coloured paint and cotton buds to create a traditional piece of African art (this piece of art work comes from a lady called Alma Thomas who is known for her exuberant colourful abstract paintings . We made some salt dough African plates with the children creating their own plates out of the salt dough before decorating them using different coloured paint The children were really engaged talking about African animals so we had a table with sensory cloths and safari animals They also made some traditional masks which play an important role to certain traditional African rituals and ceremonies, some mask represents the spirit of a deceased ancestors. Others symbolise animals or creatures to a certain family/group. This was just a snap shot of all the wonderful activities our practitioners put out to celebrate Black History Month!
so that the children could enjoy role playing and making animal sounds.
